There's a motto promoted by Death Valley souvenir shops: "Hike or Die" which apparently means: You can either keep hiking without water on the slim chance you might make it, or you can sit down and wait to die with the slim chance that help may arrive.

More useful mottos would be: "Be Prepared", "Hydrate or Die", "Avoid the Heat"
