Books | ||
Death Valley SUV Trails 310 pages
This is the must-have book for driving the back country around DVNP. |
||
Hiking Death Valley 542 pages
Focused on hiking but has information on the access roads and good general information on old mines, flora and fauna. |
||
Road Guide To Death Valley National Park 48 pages
This is a guide to passenger car roads but it's a useful overview of the attractions near Furnance Creek. |
||
A Falcon Guide to Death Valley National Park 143 pages
This is a good overview guide to the park with broader coverage than the prior listing. |
||
The Explorer's Guide to Death Valley National Park 381 pages
Written by an ex-superintendent of the park. It has detailed descriptions of roads and hikes. However, it is not a good first book because it is mostly dense detail in mile by mile descriptions of a route. I used it mostly as a reference. |
||
I found all five of the books to be useful. Even though there is overlap in the attractions they cover, each has a lot of unique information. | ||

Maps | ||
National Geographic Trails Illustrated Map of Death Valley 26" x 38"
The best and most detailed map of the park but the park is split between the front and back so it's hard to use while driving. |
||
Death Valley Backcountry Roads 16" x 23"
This map is a necessity if you're doing primitive camping since it has yellow shading over the no-camping areas. Free at the visitor center. Also downloadable as a pdf: Backcountry Roads.pdf (It takes a minute or two to display--even with a fast internet connection.) |
||
Tom Harrison Maps: Death Valley National Park Recreation Map
In the level of detail, it's in between the National Geographic and the Backcountry Roads maps. |
